The girls’ varsity basketball team jumped off to an early lead against Marin Catholic on Tuesday, and never relinquished it en route to a 41-26 victory.

Marin Catholic didn’t cede quietly, keeping the score tight until early in the third quarter when the Giants started to take control of the game with their strong defense and efficient outside shooting.

“We had strong chemistry to begin with, but tonight everything just clicked,” said junior Layla Dunne.

Freshman Jenny Walker was aggressive inside the paint, putting points on the board and grabbing rebounds. Walker also blocked nine shots.

Junior Nicki Yang also contributed with strong ball handling through Marin Catholic’s press, as well as with multiple free throw conversions.

“We really came out strong and wanted this. Everyone wants to beat their rival team, and we gave it our all tonight,” Walker said.

Marin Catholic was missing key inside presence Kate Graham, who was absent on a senior retreat.

The Giants (3-2) play Terra Linda (0-5) at home on Friday, Jan. 15.
