The varsity soccer team narrowly defeated the Drake Pirates in a defensive battle with a final score of 1-0.

During the first half the Giants’ offense struggled to make a goal against the strong blowing wind. The Drake Pirates had a very strong defense, which kept out most of the goals attempted by the Redwood team.

The Giants finally overcame the scoreless game during the second half when senior Sasha Boussina finally managed to score a goal.

Soccer coach Gabe Zieff kept reminding varsity players all week that this was a really important game for them, as the Pirates were number one in the league.

“In the second half, everyone upped their game to break the tie of 0-0 between Redwood and Drake,” said junior Jaime Planes.

“Our offense got it going and our defense stayed strong,” Planes said.

The team will travel to Novato on October 2 for their next game in the season, which starts at 4:00 p.m.
