The girls’ varsity water polo team trumped Cardinal Newman High School on Tuesday, Oct. 21, outscoring them 13-3.

Redwood’s defense prevailed throughout the matchup, with junior Sophie Parker leading the team with four steals. Redwood’s goalie, junior Laurel Doyle, additionally stepped up and played a notable game, making 15 saves.

Seven different players scored for Redwood, routed by junior Jennafer Schoonover’s four goals. Schoonover was followed by juniors Madi Barsi with three goals and Katie Isaacson with two goals.

“It went well. We had a little bit of miscommunication at the beginning of the game, but we always do well in the second half,” said junior Sarah Herzer. “We have been really good at defense this year, which has helped us. But we are working on offense and shooting.”

The Giants are now 5-4 this season, tied with Novato for the sixth place ranking, which is the last spot available to qualify for MCALs.

The girls next play Terra Linda on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at home.
