On Wednesday, Feb. 15, the girls’ varsity basketball team defeated Washington High School in their first North Coast Sectional (NCS) playoff game. Throughout the first half, the Giants, the fifth seed in the NCS Division II bracket, started off slow, trailing the 11th seed Huskies and unable to gain momentum. However, after halftime Redwood made an electric comeback, rallied by aggressive defense that limited Washington’s scoring drives, as well as consistent rebounds and effective shooting. Freshman Kitty White scored several key points and junior Ru Todd, who made the Marin County Athletic League’s all-county second team earlier this week, continued her impressive performance as Redwood’s point guard. Senior Maddie Sofnas, in return from a lengthy season injury, had an exhilarating night, leading all Giants in rebounds. In an epic fourth quarter, the Giants ultimately beat the Huskies by a final score of 57-48. With the win, Redwood moves to the next round of NCS, playing Division II’s third seed, Miramonte High School, on Saturday night.
