Following a 2-1 victory against Archie Williams High School (Archie) on Dec. 17, the boys’ varsity soccer team took to the pitch on Jan. 24, attempting to sweep the regular season series against Archie’s “Bleach Boys,” known for all of its players having bleached hair. From the start, the intensity of the matchup was evident as both teams raced back and forth down the field. After an Archie penalty, junior Thomas Griffin secured a free kick to give the Giants a 1-0 lead. Minutes later, after swerving through defenders, senior Ben Tabak took a difficult shot, launching the ball into the back of the net.

Senior Owen Swenson keeps his eyes focused on the ball as he strides towards the goal.

Though the second half began with Redwood leading 2-0, the Giants quickly increased that margin. Sophomore Sam Gersch capitalized on a cross, kicking the ball to the right of the goalie and making the score 3-0. Aggressive defense from both teams created a more physical second half, but the Giants continued their offensive attack. After one more goal from Redwood, frustration mounted for Archie, and they picked up two yellow cards before finally scoring a late goal with seven minutes left in the game, making the final score 4-1.

The Giants’ victory keeps them in first place in the Marin County Athletic League with an important match versus Terra Linda on Thursday, Jan. 26.
