With the score locked at two with runners on second and third and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning senior Trevor Foehr hit a ground ball up the middle to knock in the winning run and give Redwood the 3-2 victory over Monte Vista on Friday.

Foehr’s teammates sprinted out of the dugout to meet him in right field to celebrate his walkoff hit.

“Trevor was clutch,” said senior captain Henry Zeisler. “It’s tough to pinch hit after sitting around for seven innings.”

And to make things more special, Foehr did it on his birthday.

The victory was the spark the Giants needed while wrapping up their nonconference schedule and heading into league play.

It was not a perfectly executed game by the Giants by any means. Monte Vista’s first run came in the second inning after the leadoff runner reached on an error, stole second and later scored on a pop fly to center that fell out of senior Aubrey Sine’s glove.

But Sine would redeem himself in the fourth inning with an RBI single that scored Nicolas Belgum from second to tie the game at one apiece.

The teams traded runs once more until Foehr put Redwood on top at the right time to close out the game.

“They’re a big Division I school that was undefeated and it’s really good for our program,” Zeisler said.

This is not only an important win to get the Giants to .500 but will also speak volumes in late May for a good seed in the North Coast Section (NCS) tournament.

The Giants (3-3) will try to break the .500 mark against San Marin (2-3) as they kick off league play on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
