On Saturday, April 25, boys’ varsity baseball took on the Saint Francis Lancers in a thrilling non-league game. Sophomore Maxim Wells started the game off on the mound, allowing no runs through the first three innings. Redwood burst into action, with junior Theo Trono walking in his first at bat. Trono advanced to second before senior Miles Harrison came up to the plate and hit a Run Batted In (RBI) double, giving the Giants a 1-0 lead at the end of the first inning. Then, in the bottom of the third inning, junior Jack Moseley gave the Giants some momentum with a leadoff double. Again, senior Miles Harrison hit an RBI double, bringing Moseley home and giving the Giants a 2-0 lead at the end of the third. Saint Francis responded strongly, scoring 3 runs in the top of the fourth and taking the lead 3-2.
The next two innings were a defensive battle with Redwood accounting for 0 hits and the Lancers getting one hit. Senior Jack Gurley came to the mound in the top of the 7th inning, striking out a batter, with senior center fielder Sam Gersch and junior catcher Ethan Ferry each catching a pop out. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Randell Given came to the plate, Given hit a single, advancing to first and keeping the Giants’ hopes alive. Then, Trono lined another single, giving the Giants runners on first and second base. Sophomore Chase Johnson walked, sending senior Sam Gersch to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. With the game on the line, Gersch delivered, sending the ball to deep left field. Given and Trono advanced home to win in an electric walk-off fashion to secure the win. Redwood’s record is now 12-8-1, and they play at Petaluma on May 3rd at 11:00 a.m.
