On Friday, April 25, Tamalpais High School (Tam) hosted the final boys and girls swim meet before the Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) Championship. The varsity boys’ team pulled through with an overall win; however, the girls’ team suffered a loss to Tam.
Sophomore Cian Kelly swam the 200 freestyle, placing first in his heat, and emphasized the importance of preparation and a strong team mindset leading up to the meet.
“We had a lot of good energy before warm-ups to beat Tam, and I feel like we’ve really channeled that as a team together to be ready for the meet,” Kelly said. “I just try to stay positive. I feel like if I have a negative mindset, I’m not going to do well.”
Senior Charlie Scott, the boys’ team captain, competed in multiple events, winning the 100 butterfly and the 4×50 medley relay. He emphasized the importance of his team’s hard work and is excited to compete at MCALs next week.
“We’ve done a lot of good training so far; [we’re] feeling strong heading into our championship meet next weekend and just getting out there and competing,” Scott said.
He also reflected on the approach to MCALs, noting how all previous meets have been building up to this final event.
“We’re just looking at beating the guy next to us,” Scott said. “All this time is [spent] focusing on getting your times faster, but once you get to MCALs, it’s really just about getting your hand on the wall before the guy next to you, because then you’re going to score more points than them.”
As the season nears its end, senior girls’ captain Annabelle Kilgore is excited for the final challenge at MCAL Championships.
“I’m looking forward to being at a home meet. The last meet [will be at Redwood] and the whole team will be together at our pool. It’ll be really fun to have a lot of team spirit,” Kilgore said.
With MCALs ahead at the Redwood pool, the varsity swim team is ready to tackle its final challenge of the season.
