Boys’ varsity water polo takes their first league loss in a tight matchup with Archie Williams

On Thursday, Oct. 5,  the varsity boys’ water polo team lost in a tight game to Archie Williams with a score of 10-8. Going into the game, the Redwood team had confidence from their previous victory against San Marin, with a final score of 13-8. Senior Zach Baumgarten noted that despite the team’s impressive roster last year, they have retained significant talent.

Preparing to take a shot, Freshman Maddox Mcclennon winds back.

“[We had an edge because] Archie had a lot of players graduate last year and our new talent, specifically our freshman, has helped us level up,” Baumgarten said.

Despite the loss to Archie Williams, Redwood put up a fight. The Giants had the lead several times throughout the game. Early one point leads in the first and second quarter granted the team with momentum, with notable goals from junior Ossie Joplin and senior Theo Eschilman. To end the first half, Archie Williams had scored three, Redwood four.

With a two-goal lead, Redwood continued to carry their confidence. However, junior Sawyer Goldberg found this confidence to have some less positive effects.

“After the first half, we were feeling confident so we started to mess around more, not taking it seriously [enough],” Goldberg said.

Approaching the goal for a shot, senior Ryan Voges lifts the ball high.

The third quarter was when the home team lost its advantage, with the Giants only scoring 1 goal while the Falcons had 3. Goldberg found that the team had a difficult time scoring for the rest of the game.

“We couldn’t break their defense down,” Golberg said. “We’re going to put this game behind us and focus on our next opponent.”

Watch the boys’ team fight to maintain their winning season as they will face said next opponent, Marin Catholic on Oct. 11 at Redwood.
