Prom proposal contest inspires romantic gestures

There are a thousand ways to ask someone to Prom, but only three people find a way to ask that lead to a free pair of tickets.

Each year, Leadership sponsors the Prom Proposal Contest, in which Redwood students can submit a video or photo of their Prom proposal in hopes of winning tickets.

Herz chose to do a take-off of Monty Python because he loves the movie.

“It’s one of my favorite comedic films,” Herz said.  “Actually, Talia has never seen it, so I figured I’d enlighten her. Also my joking nickname for her is ‘princess’ so I thought it would be good.”

Herz said the proposal involved a lot of planning.

“It was incredibly meticulous, it involved phone calls to people I had never met,” Herz said. “I was able to pull some strings at the Lark because one of my friend’s mom happens to work there. But it involved a couple of weeks of planning and doing a lot of things at the last minute, and hours of work, but it paid off at the end.”

For another winning proposal, junior Adam Loo enlisted the help of the entire girls’ varsity lacrosse team. He created t-shirts that read “Prom?” for every member of the team and had all of them wear the shirts in a huddle one day before practice. Loo hid in the middle of the huddle ,and when junior Natalie Breuner arrived, the huddle broke to reveal Loo with a bouquet of flowers.

Loo originally got the idea from his sister, freshman Kendra Loo.

“[Kendra] came up with some crazy ideas but we decided on that one because I thought it would be fun and it was partially my idea,” Loo said.
In the third winning proposal, senior Yodai Yasunaga asked his date, senior Jenny Stryker, through song. Yasunaga made a cover of Bruno Mars’ “Marry You” by changing the lyrics to “I think I wanna go to Prom with you.”Yasunaga performed the song in front of Stryker’s second period AP Spanish class.

According to Yasunaga, the proposal was much awaited.

“We both knew we were going to go together but she didn’t know I was actually going to ask her — like have a proposal,” Yasunaga said. “She kept asking me if I was going to ask her and I wouldn’t respond to her and she got really mad.”

Yasunaga said he was happy that winning the prize will save him money.

“It was really nice to have the free tickets because Prom can be really expensive, because everything adds up,” he said.

All of the winning videos are available online, and in case you were wondering, all the girls said yes.
