On Nov. 6, Ensemble Production Company (EPiC) debuted Hadestown in the Little Theater, drawing a packed audience for the opening weekend.
The production features a fully student-led cast and crew, with performers ranging from freshmen to seniors. Upperclassmen take on mostly leading roles, though several sophomores also step into major parts. The musical, inspired by ancient Greek mythology, retells the story of Orpheus and Eurydice’s journey through the Underground in a soulful blend of folk and jazz music.
The role of Eurydice, the show’s ingénue, is played in alternating performances by senior Charlotte “Cat” Domet and junior Anastasia Lazarenko.
“In this show, [there] is a lot of perseverance. Orpheus is constantly going for this girl, Eurydice, [which is] kind of like going for your dreams. Within our generation, we have this idea going for our dreams and [Hadestown] encompasses that,” Lazarenko said.
Junior Julien Voy steps into the role of Hades, the show’s antagonist. As an actor, Voy understands the depth his character brings to the show by opposing the protagonists, shaping the plot.
“The theme of the show is getting over difficult things and learning to keep going. After a [sad twist] to the story, the cast says, ‘we sing it again’ at the end of the show. It comes full circle,” Voy said.
Students in the cast rehearse an average of 12 hours each week, while the crew dedicates additional time through an eighth-period Theater Production class.
The Redwood High School Foundation funded the costumes, sets and production for Hadestown. A QR code printed on the back of the playbill invited audience members to contribute donations in support of future EPiC productions.
Hadestown will continue its run Nov. 13 to 15 at 7 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults, available at the door.
