As the year comes to an end and graduation looms closer, many seniors are enjoying the bittersweet mixed feelings that all their “lasts” are bringing. Many seniors will be moving on from more than just Redwood; they will also be moving away from Marin, the place where most grew up, and from all the activities and natural beauty the Bay Area has to offer. This calls for one final round of “lasts,” a time to enjoy some classic Marin and San Francisco childhood favorites before leaving in the fall.
Walk Across the Golden Gate Bridge
What better way to celebrate moving away than playing tourist in your own city? Grab a coat, some walking shoes and your camera, because this activity will revive all the memories of the countless drives taken to and from the city. Although it might be chilly, walking across the bridge is sure to remind you of the beauty of our home and spur your appreciation for what we may have grown to take for granted. Make it even more nostalgic by bringing some friends or family – you’ll be glad you did (and that you took the photos) when you move into your new home in the fall.

Hike the Headlands
This activity is the perfect opportunity to take in the views while also getting in exercise. With over 105 different hiking and walking trails, the fresh air and abundance of nature are a great way to take advantage of Marin’s variety of outdoor opportunities. If you’re up for a challenge, consider the Hawk Hill trail for beautiful views of San Francisco. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to explore a few different landscapes, try the Tennessee Valley trail, a favorite in my family that ends with access to one of California’s staples: a scenic beach. Taking a hike on one of these trails with your family will bring back fond memories and is a great way to make the most of your summer.
Get a sundae at Ghirardelli Square
After all that hiking, you’re going to need a pick-me-up. A San Francisco classic and a childhood favorite, a sundae from Ghirardelli is the perfect treat. There’s a variety of different choices, but the quintessential World Famous Hot Fudge Sundae with nuts, lots of chocolate and a cherry on top is sure to please one’s inner child. Make your adventure even better and take the ferry into the city, or ride a cable car on your way back. With limited time left, sundaes and other only-found-in-San-Francisco originals are a great way to take advantage of our home.

Go to Bolinas Fairfax Ridge
A classic for anyone who has lived in Marin: watching the sunset at Bolinas Ridge. With stunning views, this is the perfect opportunity to bond with friends and family over your appreciation for the beauty of Marin. Bring a blanket, a burrito and a speaker, and your night will definitely end on a high note. Although it takes 40 or so minutes to arrive, the top is worth it; just pick your favorite playlist, roll the windows down and enjoy the place we are lucky to call home. This activity is especially enjoyable in the summer when the weather is warm and the fog doesn’t block the sunset, so make sure to make the trip up there at some point before you leave in the fall.
With these staple Bay Area activities, you’re sure to make the most of your remaining time and absorb all the Bay Area charm your home has to offer, all while making memories that will last a lifetime.
