On March 18, after more than four decades of serving Marin County shoppers, Macy’s at The Village at Corte Madera will be closed its doors for good. The closure, announced earlier this year, marks a significant shift in the retail landscape. Known for its expansive selection of clothing, home goods and cosmetics, Macy’s has long been a staple of the mall, drawing customers from across Marin and beyond.
For years, Macy’s has been a go-to destination for families and fashion-forward shoppers alike. However, with the rise of online shopping, the Corte Madera Macy’s has seen its sales steadily decline. The decision to close is a part of Macy’s larger national strategy to consolidate its operations and focus on its more profitable locations. Over the course of the next three years, Macy’s plans to close 150 locations nationwide.
Mall-goers are left with mixed feelings about the closure, such as Julie Thompson, a resident of Greenbrae who frequented the store for both its clothing and cosmetics.
“It’s a real bummer,” Thompson said. “I’ve been shopping here for years. It’s just a part of the community, you know?”
Others are equally nostalgic, including Rachel Diaz, a Corte Madera local, who recalled the store’s long history in the area.
“I remember coming here with my mom when I was a kid,” Diaz said. “It’s sad to see it go, but it feels like things [at the mall] are changing everywhere.”
Despite the closure, The Village at Corte Madera is working to make the transition as smooth as possible for its customers. Christine Miller, the senior marketing manager of the mall, emphasized that they are dedicated to continuing to provide a dynamic and engaging shopping experience.
“While we will miss Macy’s, we are excited about the future of The Village [at Corte Madera] and have several new developments in the works,” Miller said. “We want to create a space that offers something for everyone in the community.”
The closing of Macy’s is a reflection of broader retail trends, with many department stores struggling to maintain a profitable amount of customers in the face of changing consumer habits. With many shoppers now opting for online retailers or smaller boutique shops, large department stores like Macy’s have had to close their doors entirely. Despite the closure of Macy’s, the future of The Village at Corte Madera is not threatened. “We’re [talking] with several potential tenants and we’re optimistic about what’s to come,” Miller said.
In the meantime, the mall will continue to provide its current shops, restaurants and services for local residents.
For those looking to shop at Macy’s before the closure, the store is offering closing discounts for the next few weeks as they clear out inventory. Macy’s final day of operation is scheduled for March 18, giving shoppers a chance to grab their last-minute favorites before the space is vacated.
Though this is the end of an era for Macy’s, it signals the beginning of a new phase for the Village of Corte Madera. While it’s hard to say goodbye to such a longstanding local fixture, the community remains hopeful that the space will soon be filled with a new energy and that The Village at Corte Madera will continue to thrive in the years to come.
