First-ranked girls’ varsity soccer were eager to tally another win as they played in their final regular season game. In the final minutes of a scoreless defensive battle, junior Caitlin Titcombe rebounded the ball toward the goal, grazing the bottom corner of the frame. Redwood coaches and players were outraged by the referee’s call that it was not a goal, thinking the ball clipped the net. The game ended in a 0-0 tie, tarnishing their strong league record of 5-0-2.
Gearing up for Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) playoffs, the Giants faced Archie Williams High School on Feb. 5 at Redwood. Following a decisive win against the first-ranked Tamalpais Hawks, the Redwood entered the game confident in their ability to take down sixth-ranked Archie Williams High School. However, the Giants’ failure to capitalize on scoring opportunities led them to tie the Falcons in their final league match.
The defense on both sides was intense. Starting defender junior Holly Thomas prevented Archie Williams from making advancements toward the Giants’ goal. But the Falcons’ backline remained just as strong, stifling Redwood’s leading scorer, senior Sarah Farese. Both goalkeepers also made key saves down the stretch.
With a finalized league record of 5-0-3, the Giants hope to erase this game from memory and enter the playoffs with confidence. After Tamalpais High School defeated Marin Catholic on Wednesday, Redwood fell to the second seed. Their MCAL playoff game will be next Thursday at home and their opponent has yet to be determined.
