On Wednesday, Jan. 22, girls’ varsity soccer secured a victory against the Marin Catholic Wildcats. The Giants walked away with a 1-0 win, securing a Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) record of 3-0-1, further solidifying their strong start to the season.
The game started off slow, with both teams playing defensively. Both teams picked up in the last 15 minutes of the game with the ball being pushed into opposing territory. Redwood put in a strong effort to prevent the Wildcats from scoring, striving to keep the energy up throughout the entire game. Junior midfielder Sydney Middleton remarked that maintaining that energy was a major factor in their victory.
“We had really strong energy all the way through the game and everyone believed in each other. We all had each other’s backs and you really can’t beat us when we have energy like we did today,” Middleton said.
Junior midfielder Caitlin Titcombe agreed that the team’s vigor was crucial for the win.
“We kept up our energy while playing, and we didn’t quit, which was really important for this game. We all came into the game knowing that we had to have high energy, and we just stuck with that all the way through,” Titcombe said.
Beyond energy, the Giants’ strong communication and teamwork were key factors in the win. The team effectively communicated with one another and was able to keep their composure even when the Wildcats increased their possession and pressure.
“The team worked well when we connected passes, especially when [the game] started getting tough and [Marin Catholic] had more possession; we stayed strong and didn’t give up,” Titcombe said.
As the game neared the end, Redwood successfully scored the first and only goal out of both teams, leading to a Giants win. After a long back-and-forth and an assist from Titcombe, senior Sarah Farese scored, bringing her total up to 14 goals this season and further establishing her as a key player for Redwood.
After an exciting win, the team is ready to keep the winning streak alive. The Giants will play against Novato High School at Novato on Friday, Jan. 24 at 3:15 p.m.
