Photo Essay: Varsity girls’ soccer triumphs over Tam in nail-biting victory

With energy high on both sides of the ball, the fourth seed Redwood Giants faced the first seed Tamalpais Hawks in an exhilarating match on the evening of Feb. 7. A large number of fans came out to watch the rivalry from both sides, barely missing the rain which ended shortly before kickoff. After a scrappy, high energy first half and a Hawks disallowed offside goal, the first 40 minutes of play ended with a 0-0 score. Coming out of the half with renewed energy, in the early minutes of the second half, a cross which bounced out of the box, was fired top right from 30 yards out by captain Colette Boyden. Following this impressive goal, the game remained equally physical as tensions remained high on both teams. Junior Evelyn Spiegel was especially successful at keeping the ball and out maneuvering opposing players in the midfield. After a stressful final minutes, the Giants were able to close out the game with a 1-0 lead. With this win, the Giants will go on to rematch Branson this Saturday after a loss against them earlier in the season.
