Photo Essay: Varsity field hockey wins fifth consecutive MCAL championship

On Friday, Oct. 27th, the girls’ varsity field hockey team delivered an exhilarating victory to San Francisco University High School in the MCAL finals. After a tough loss to University at the beginning of the season, 0-1, the team returned with a swift win against Tamalpais High School on Wednesday, proving their determination and grit. This win advanced them to the MCAL finals and pushed them to win their fifth consecutive MCAL championship.

As eager friends and family waited on the sidelines to cheer for their teams, the first quarter commenced with high energy. While both teams were competitive, the first half ended with a nail-biting 0-0 tie. In the second half, Redwood successfully kept the ball on University’s side of the field, waiting for a chance to hit it into the net. However, the game ended in a 0-0 score.

Because of the 0-0 tie, the game continued in a 10-minute overtime match. Energy levels heightened as both teams powered through the already hour and a half long game. Yet again the score was tied 0-0, and another overtime match was announced. Senior and team captain Sammy Haan made a dash for University’s goal, but was blocked by their goalie. Finally, after all matches ended in 0-0, a shoot-out was announced. Both teams lined up along the field and their goalies crouched, ready to catch the winning goal. Sophomore Lucy Jeffers scored the first goal, which was quickly followed up by a point from University. Haan scored the next goal, making the score 2-1, but University was quick to respond and the score was tied at 2-2 once again. Deftly maneuvering past the goalie, Jeffers scored the game-winning point. Senior Goalie Caroline Muller caught the last ball from University before it hit the net, leading Redwood to a hard-fought and well-deserved victory.
