Wildfire breaks out on Christmas Tree Hill

There was a wildfire above Christmas Tree Hill at about 4:00 PM today, Oct. 6, that was put out about an hour later.

Fire trucks from Larkspur, Ross, Kentfield, and Marin County were on the scene as well as police from the Central Marin Police Department, and access to Christmas Tree Hill was blocked off.

The fire was put out about an hour after it started due to multiple calls coming from worried neighbors.

Yoshio Boris, junior, was on the highway when he saw the smoke and decided to check it out for himself.

“I saw flames and felt compelled to try and help out,” said Boris, who followed the smoke to Christmas Tree Hill.

A member of the Larkspur Fire Department said that there were about 20 firemen combating the fire. There were also two planes flying over the fire that came from Sacramento and Northern California, one dropping repellent and the other watching from above.

Towards the end of the fire, a helicopter dropped water from Phoenix Lake on the affected area in an effort to put out the flames.

Senior Jackson Cooney lives on Marina Ridge near the fire and said he could see the smoke.

“I saw smoke and I tried to figure out where it is coming from,” Cooney said. “It looks like it is getting under control.”

The mild weather conditions made it more difficult for the fire to spread even though smoke was moving down the hill, according to the Larkspur Fire Department.

The Larkspur Fire Department said they are not sure how the fire started due to the isolated location under the fire road.
