On Thursday, Feb. 23, the varsity baseball team surpassed Rancho Cotate in an extra-inning showdown. With both teams going into their second games of the season, the Giants outshined the Cougars after winning by a final score of 1-0. The team expected a pitching duel, but were surprised when the score was still 0-0 after the seventh inning. The Giants’ defense was phenomenal, and pitching efforts by juniors Rex Solle and Max Paul, as well as sophomore Matthew Knauer, carried the team to victory. Solle started the game and pitched 4.1 innings with seven strikeouts. Knauer came into the game in relief and pitched 2.2 innings, and Paul closed it off and pitched the top of the eighth. In total, the pitching staff only gave up two hits. The offensive spark did not come until the bottom of the eighth inning when sophomore Sam Gersch hit a walkoff single with the bases loaded to lead the Giants to a victory. Redwood hopes to continue their strong start to their season on Feb. 25 at home when they face Sacred Heart.
