The room sat captivated as junior Rayna Saron rhythmically told the story of losing her grandmother. Behind Saron’s powerful voice, enthusiastic snapping could be heard.

Senior Keever Mulligan, a returning Poetry Team member, performs an original poem at Tuesday’s auditions.

Saron was just one of a handful of students who came into English teacher Jeff Ryan’s classroom to participate in or to watch the Redwood Poetry Team auditions today at lunch.

Six students attended the auditions to try out for the team, along with four returning members who automatically make the team again.

According to English teacher Alex Franklin, one of the team’s advisers, there is no maximum number of people that the team can accept. However, in order to compete against Tam and Drake High Schools there must be a minimum of six members on the team.

For the past three years, the Redwood Poetry Team has earned the title of champion against Tam and Drake High Schools.

Auditions will continue next Tuesday at lunch in Mr. Ryan’s room.
