Redwood routs Ukiah as season nears end

The boys’ varsity water polo team took care of business early and often, winning 22-1 against Ukiah on Thursday. The game remained competitive throughout despite the wide margin, but Redwood’s consistently high level of play secured the crucial victory.

This win improves the Giants’ record to 10-1 (2nd in MCALs) and keeps them in the hunt for a shot at the MCAL championship.

The game began aggressively, with neither team able to control the pace. By the end of the first quarter, Redwood began to settle down and managed to take a 6-1 lead.

In the second quarter, Redwood’s offense and defense began to perform at a higher level. It dominated the period with eight goals to none, resulting in a comfortable 14-1 lead at the half.

“We did a good job setting up, and we did a good job on converting most of our six on 5 opportunities,” said sophomore Scott Matthews after the game. “We also did a good job communicating on defense, and letting up only one goal reflects our defensive efforts.”

Redwood continued to play well in the second half. Seniors Wyatt Barker and Francesco Cico led the way, each scoring three goals. Goalie Quinlan O’Connor also had a strong performance defensively, only allowing one goal.

Redwood is now 10-1 and is in second place in the MCAL standings, behind an undefeated Drake team. According to Matthews, the Giants are going the extra mile in order to prepare for the playoffs by coming in on weekends to watch game film of their future opponents.

Redwood looks to continue its success next Tuesday at Tam, its last regular season game before the playoffs.
