Student portion of volleyball tournament comes to dramatic close

Peter Kennedy blocks a kill from Tyler Jackson in Monday’s intramural volleyball game.

“That’s how we win baby!” shouted Patrick Tracy as Liam Bourke smacked down the final point to clinch a victory for the Harlem Stoge Trotters.

The Harlem Stoge Trotters defeated the Bomb Squad 36-27 on Monday to win the 18th annual intramural volleyball tournament. The Harlem Stoge Trotters won first place, and  will now go on to face the teachers for the final match.

“I just can’t explain it. You know it was great competition, and it was one of the toughest journeys of my life,” said Matt Kennis, a player for the Stoge Trotters.

Juniors Patrick Tracy, Liam Bourke, Matt Kennis, Kevin Watson, Peter Kennedy, and Donovan Ahern played for the Stoge Trotters, while the Bomb Squad players included seniors Joe Compagno, Tyler Jackson, Will Finnie, Mitch Thompson, and Jack Elton.

Coming in to the tournament, the Bomb Squad was seeded fourth overall, and the Stoge Trotters were seeded tenth.

The underdog Stoge Trotters had a hard path to the final game, having to face part of the varsity girl’s volleyball team and the number three seed team, White Fury.

In the beginning of the game the Bomb Squad took a commanding 9-6 lead, but the Stoge Trotters came back and tied up the score at halftime 15-15.

“The next half will be a moment you all remember for the rest of your lives,” said Mike Dibley, intramural volleyball ref, at the start of the second half.

The score of the second half was neck and neck until the game was tied 23-23. Then the Stoge Trotters went on a 13-4 run to finish the game.

“We played our hearts out today, but they were the better team,” said Bomb Squad player Tyler Jackson.

The Stoge Trotters players each won gift cards for the Counter. They will play the teachers in the near future.
