To say that the 2025 Redwood spring season was impressive is an understatement. Last year, the season brought home three Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) titles, two Division one North Coast Section (NCS) Championships, 45 all-league members and countless memories. With numerous collegiate athletes graduating last year, it begs the question of how each respective Redwood team will bounce back this season. In the article below, we predict how each team will do based on returning players, past success and overall schedule strength.
Girls’ Lacrosse: The girls lost a heartbreaking MCAL championship game to Marin Catholic last year, but bounced right back with an NCS Division 1 title against a tough San Ramon Valley team. The girls ranked 4th in California following last year’s season. The team graduated two starting seniors, Sadie Haan and Presley Pewitt (Chapman Lacrosse). Despite these losses, the girls return first team members Lucy Jeffers, Lucy Miller and Nina Baker, alongside team members Claire Johnson, and honorable mention member Phoebe Miller. We predict that the girls team will finish 1st in MCAL and 3rd in California by the end of the year.
Boys’ Baseball: Coming off an MCAL championship, the varsity baseball team looks to complete the 3-peat, winning three MCAL championships in the last three years. Last season the Giants finished ranked 174th in California and 25th in the NCS after dropping their first game in NCS Division 1, 9-5 against Benicia. Despite their shaky run in the regular season, losing six games, they came into the playoffs and won three playoff games. The Baseball team is now losing six starters in first team members Sam Gersch and Miles Harrison, second team player Matthew Knauer, honorable mention Kaelin Christman, TJ Beck and Lucas Ghio. However, they still return two first team players in Jack Moseley and Theo Trono. We predict the boys finishing with a record of 19-5 and going to the MCAL championship, either losing early in NCS division 1 or winning NCS division 2.

Boys’ Golf: Cole O’Connell led the way for the Giants last year as he won the MCAL solos as a sophomore. However, in the team competition, they finished in third place. Some of the key players that graduated include first team nominee Brody Root, second team member Beckman Watrous and an honorable mention in Jack Mount. “It’s going to be tough this year, Marin Catholic and Branson are looking really good this year,” O’Connel said, “We have a lot of new guys this year but they’re all solid players so we are hopefully going to be playing some good golf to give ourselves a good chance to win it all.” With O’Connell and second team nominee James Hamill leading the way for the Giants, we predict them finishing in third place in MCALs as a team, and with O’Connell going back to back in the solos.
Swimming and diving: Last year the girls finished in second place overall in the MCALs while the boys did not do as well. The girls team is returning many key players, including a top swimmer in the nation in junior Avery Gunst. The boys are also looking to be more competitive this year with Senior Oliver Rodgers and Junior Cian Kelly leading the way for them. We predict that both the girls’ and boys’ teams will be at the top of the MCAL leaderboard and come in a top three finish.
Track and Field: After a tough finish for both the girls’ and boys’ varsity teams last year falling behind Tamalpais in MCAL finishing in second place, both boys and girls have a great shot to win the league this year. The girls however did win the NCS Division 1. Unfortunately the boys will be graduating Cal commit, and top decathlete in the nation last year, in Antonio Bayon. Bayon was the MCAL player of the year for track events as well. However, they are returning the 2nd and 3rd place finishers in the 100m in Senior Marco Cleary and Junior Dylan Schermerhorn. On the girls side, they have MCAL player of the year for track Julia Bayon returning for the Giants. The girls are also returning Annalise Horn, the girls’ long jump winner from last year. We predict the boys having some top finishes in events, and the girls winning the MCAL.
Boys’ Volleyball: The boys dominated last year in league play, closing an undefeated regular season (16-0) and taking home the MCAL championship. They ended in a surprisingly low 201st place in California despite dominating North Coast play and finishing runner-up in Division 1. The boys’ loss graduated seniors and first teamers Beckett Shewey and Jack Alley and honorable mention member Charlie Gerhman. The boys return committed athlete Evan Wang (New York University) but lose the bulk of their attack. We predict that the boys win MCAL with a record of 14-2 and finish runner-up again in the NCS division one.
Girls’ Softball: Out of all the spring Redwood sports, softball might have lost the least amount of production from last season. The team finished 2nd in MCAL with a record of 11-3 in league play and 315th in California. The team graduated 2nd team member Hailey Carlton and senior Makaila Eller, but returns star players Stella Belloumini (Pitcher of the Year), first team members Ava Brown and 2nd team member Ashley Ball. We predict that the girls will finish 2nd in MCAL (but won’t be surprised if they are 1st), and make a run for the NCS division 2 title.
Boys’ Lacrosse: Similar to the girls team, boys’ Lacrosse lost in the MCAL championship to Marin Catholic. The boys held a league record of 8-3 and an overall record of 13-10. They also lost in the 2nd round of NCS to Tamalapais. The boys graduated key players John Anderluh, Graham Weir, Reed Werner, Luke Tempero and Jackson Gurvich. The team returns one all-league member, Charlie Anderson, but as perennially one of the best teams in the MCAL and the departure of Marin Catholic from the MCAL, we predict the boys will finish in 1st place in MCAL and have a similar result in NCS.

Boys’ Tennis: Out of all spring teams last year, boys’ tennis just might have been the best. They finished with a 19-4 record last year and went undefeated in MCAL play, winning the championship, in addition to winning NCS division 1 for doubles. The boys earned themselves nine All-League members. Out of the nine they have five returning in first teamers Casra Afsharipour, Will Greenwald, and Julian Zhang, second teamer Calado Fazal and honorable mention Alejandro Puentes. We predict that the results will continue to come for the Giants as they are going to finish in 1st place in MCAL and have similar if not better results in the NCS.
