On Friday, Jan. 23, the girls’ varsity basketball team played the Marin Catholic (MC) Wildcats, ending in a 51-43 win. Going into the game, the Giants were seeded first in the Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) standings. After their win against the Wildcats, the Giants now advance to 5-0 in league play. The Giants came out strong, ending the first quarter 16-5. Through the beginning of the third quarter, they were able to keep ahead, ending the second quarter and starting halftime with a ten-point lead (21-18).
During the third quarter, the Wildcats tried to close the gap, but still trailed behind as the Giants led 38-31 at the start of the fourth quarter.
The game was a rivalry, and the Giants had played the team before back in December, winning that game as well, 55-41.
Senior captain and four-year varsity member Kitty White explained how despite the rivalry, the teams are friendly, which makes the game even more fun to play.
“It’s always fun playing MC because it’s a rivalry game and we know everyone on the other team,” White said. “Playing [when] you know the person [is always fun] because you can ‘go at it’ on the court, but then after it’s all over you’re hugging and smiling and saying good job.”
Fellow senior captain and four-year varsity member Brooke Denler explained the changing dynamics of the team and how they have maintained their chemistry.
“We lost key players last year, but we’ve had three freshmen and one new sophomore to fill those roles in. Our team is really deep, and I think our chemistry is great,” Denler said.
White talked about how they were trying to keep their momentum going from their two previous wins this week, against Moreau Catholic on Monday (1/19) and Branson on Wednesday (1/21).
“In general, the wins are always helpful. It’s been great for our team because it means that everyone can get on the court and score. The more we can play in games where everyone gets a chance to play, the better [our chemistry],” White said.
Head coach Zach Borello has seen a lot of growth in the team since they played against MC previously in their non-league game.
“Our toughness [and] our great determination has gotten better throughout the season. Our offense is really clicking right now,” Borello said.
The Giants will play again against San Marin on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at home.
