On Jan. 21, girls varsity basketball dominated Branson, taking control of the court and winning 59-32. Their season has been successful while also reflecting the coaching style of Coach Zach Borello. Borello has been the girls varsity basketball coach for the past five years, and reflected on the values he sets on and off the court for the team that helps them master the league.

“Whether you’re number 1 on the team, or you’re number 14 on the team, or you’re number 7 on the team, the standards are all the same. Expectations are all the same,” Borello said.
Borello’s expectations for the team are high, but this game met those expectations, showcasing the consistency that earns them wins.

“It’s the consistency [and] how we practice. We challenge ourselves in practice. There are high expectations in that room and high standards,” Borello said.
Their stability was persistent throughout the game, as they maintained an average 15-point lead, demonstrating the high hopes they set for every game.
Senior captain Kitty White has been a team leader and has strengthened team chemistry while commanding plays on the court. White is set to play for California State Monterey Bay next year, continuing her basketball career.
“We did a good job of adjusting, [which is] what got us ahead, and then I was just making good passes [and we were] playing as a team. A lot of different people scored a lot of points today, [and] it’s just all about sharing the ball and getting people open,” White said.

Several stars shone during the game, including junior Maddie Petersymeyer, who showed her domination on the court, playing excellent offense and defense. Borello reflected on her skills in this game, highlighting Petersmeyer’s expertise.

“She’s had a really good year. She’s unafraid, she’s driving [to the basket], she’s shooting the three, [and] she’s defending. She’s everything that we want out of Maddie right now, and she deserves a shout-out,” Borello said.
Petersmeyer has played on varsity since her freshman year, displaying her high-level basketball abilities. As their season progresses, they hold their values close and will continue to advance on to their next games.
The Giants are currently 4-0, taking the lead in the Marin County Athletic League (MCAL).
