On Oct. 16, the girls’ flag football team lost to Northgate High School, losing their five-game winning streak. Redwood started strong with a lead of 6-0, but with only five minutes left on the clock in the first quarter, Northgate scored two touchdowns. They continued with this momentum throughout the rest of the game.
Junior Juliet McNamara stood out as a defensive player, having some great tackles throughout the match.
“The team has started to become more competitive and we’ve started to have a lot more knowledge of the game,” McNamara said.
Head Coach Tyrone Robinson added to this by explaining that the stats don’t show the whole story; their effort does.
“The biggest thing is resilience and execution,” Robinson said.
Northgate High School is number one in the girls’ flag football league, whereas Redwood is number three, showing the difficulty in the game for the whole team.
Although the loss was unfortunate, junior Lauren Van Dusen expresses her contentment with the game and how well the team has been improving.
Robinson and Van Dusen elaborated on how, during practices, the girls have been working on their plays and have gained a deeper knowledge of the sport in general. The girls are looking to finish out the season strong next week and win against Terra Linda on Oct. 22 at Terra Linda before the playoffs begin.
