The Giants moved to 3-2 on the season after completing a comeback win against Petaluma 31-21 this Saturday. Leading the way for the Giants was senior wide receiver Dylan McGrath, who scored four instrumental touchdowns.
The game started a little shaky for the Giants after the defense let up two rushing touchdowns, one to senior Trojan quarterback Aidan Wirtz, and the other to senior running back Evan Clarke, quickly putting Petaluma up 14-0.
Bouncing back quickly, the Giants found their rhythm on offense as quarterback Tommy Vazquez connected with McGrath for a 65-yard touchdown. Not long after, Redwood retained possession and Vazquez linked with McGrath again for a 19-yard touchdown, tying the game up at 14.
With under a minute left before halftime, the Trojans made a crucial decision, going for the first down on fourth-and-4 from the Giants’ 32-yard line. Trojan running back Jonah Crichton was stuffed at the line of scrimmage by junior defensive end Wes Fitzpatrick, causing a turnover on downs.
The Giants then stormed down the field, situating themselves into field goal range. Senior kicker William Suko capitalized on the opportunity, placing the Giants up 17-14 heading into the half.
After a quiet third quarter for both teams, the Giants started the fourth quarter off with a bang, making it 24-14 after McGrath took a screen pass 61 yards to the end zone. The Trojans were quick to turn the ball back over to Redwood after senior Rudy Vazquez forced a fumble and Fitzpatrick recovered it. On that drive, McGrath found the end zone for his fourth score of the day, making the score 31-14, and leaving the game out of reach for the Trojans.
The Giants closed the game out in victory formation, sealing the victory 31-21. Redwood is red hot, having won their last three games. The team looks to progress their winning streak to four as they hit the road next week, facing off against Casa Grande.
