The sentence, “We are still in this,” was constantly repeated by Redwood players throughout the Saturday morning match. On Mar. 16, girls’ varsity lacrosse came up short in a heated rivalry game against Saint Ignatius (SI). SI dominated the first quarter with a five-goal streak, but the Giants kept the game competitive. Senior captain Presley Pewitt led Redwood’s attack, helping the team get multiple goals and stay in the game.
Despite this, SI continued to put pressure on Redwood’s defense. Junior Nina Baker led communication amongst the Giants’ defense, motivating them to mark their players. But ultimately, SI won the majority of the draws, allowing them to quickly bring the ball down to the Giants’ goal, and leading them to get many quick shots that took the defense off guard. Redwood struggled to get the ball into Saint Ignatius territory, but when they did, they were successful.
The Giants kept pushing, playing much stronger in the third and fourth quarters. Junior Mimi Wood played a major role in getting the ball out of Redwood’s defensive half and up to their attack. In the last couple minutes of the game, Redwood experienced a wave of motivation and secured two more goals, leaving the final score of the game at 7-14.
