Boys’ baseball played a nail-biting non-league game against St. Ignatius (SI) at home on Friday, Feb. 28. Historically, the Giants have been dominant, as shown at the game last year versus SI, winning 6-5. This year’s game ended in a 5-5 tie. Redwood started the game strong, scoring four runs in the first inning compared to the Wildcats’ two runs.
Going into the game, the Giants were excited, as they had formerly played against SI in the NorCal State Division 2 semifinals.

Junior Theo Trono, the former player of the year, appeared at bat four times on Friday night.
“We all knew this was going to be a close and competitive game until the end,” Trono said. “There could have been small things done by each team that could have completely shifted the outcome.”
Junior outfielder Willy Steele explains the emotions carried throughout the team after the game.
“We were all very mad [post-game] because we knew that we could’ve beaten them and that we are better than them,” Steele said.
Although the Giants’ emotions were high post-game, they remain optimistic for the season moving forward.

“We all shift our mindset from this game to the next because with 24 games in the regular season, you can’t be so hung up on one game,” Trono said. “We always look positively to the next one.”
Steele shared Trono’s opinion, believing that the Giants will bounce back and remain positive.
“After tough games like those, we just have to pick each other up and have good energy,” Steele said. “We will flush this down and focus on our next game.”
Senior pitcher Matthew Knauer has led the Giants with nine strikeouts this season. Similarly, junior Ethan Ferry’s dominance in batting average shows his strength on the field. With a 0.600 batting average, he leads the team at bat.
SI’s record moves to 1-0-1 by tying the game. Don’t miss the Giants play on Friday, March 7, at 3:30 PM against Novato for their second league game.
