Boys’ varsity lacrosse cemented themselves as one of the top teams in Marin County after a blowout 16-3 victory against Casa Grande at home on Mar. 18.
Senior Jackson Gurvich led them to victory with five goals, highlighted by a beautiful behind-the-back finish on a fast break in the first period. Redwood won nearly every face-off as a result of senior John Anderluh’s dominant performance. Junior Tommy Vasquez had an impressive hat trick himself, scoring from all angles and distances. Moreover, his older brother, senior Kody Vasquez, a long stick defender, miraculously cut into the box while cradling the ball and somehow scored as his stick went flying in the air. But the best part of the game was when senior Sean Cunneen, a first-year lacrosse player, entered the game late in the fourth quarter. He went right at the defenders, dodging and maneuvering like the football player he is, eventually getting free near the goal. He wound up his stick and flung a prayer at the goalie, having no intent of scoring, and the ball got through the goalie. Cunneen was later crowned player of the game after that funny but impressive performance.
The Giants’ defense was relentless, leaving everything on the field and letting no Casa Grande player get an easy path to the net. Senior goalie Cameron Momsen was a brick wall, letting up only three goals and making some spectacular saves. The Giants look to continue this domination against Branson on Thursday and Monte Vista on Friday.
