Varsity softball took on Marin Catholic in a rivalry game on March 19, winning 10-4. The game had a slow pace as each team attempted to outduel the other, going longer than usual. Currently, the Giants have a 4-5 record, taking fourth place in the Marin County Athletics League (MCAL). Their game versus the Marin Catholic Wildcats was the league opener, giving them a 1-0 MCAL record.

Junior Ashley Ball led the team in hits, with three in three at-bats. Her success in the game led the Giants to their triumph over Marin Catholic, who now has a 2-2 overall record. Ava Brown, a junior who leads the team with a 0.500 batting average, scored one run in her four plate appearances against the Wildcats.

“I think we had a great defense… it was a team win and everyone contributed,” said Brown.
Emily Atkinson, long-time head coach, weighed in on the competitive environment that comes with playing the Wildcats.
“Marin Catholic is always a competitive game, whether they’re better than us or we’re better than them… we come in hyped and they come in hyped,” said Atkinson.

Although competitive, the Giants had a player on base for almost the entire game, finishing with a 0.580 team on-base percentage, compared to Marin Catholic’s 0.371 clip.
“It’s one of those games that no matter what, whether it’s a high-scoring game or low-scoring game, it’s just been a rivalry we’ve had for years competing against them,” said Atkinson.
Redwood persisted through the end, with senior Makaila Eller leading the Giants to a victory, scoring a run while going two for four from the plate. The Giants hope to continue their undefeated MCAL season with a big game against San Rafael High School on Thursday, March 20.
