On Thursday, Jan. 23, boys’ varsity soccer dismantled the Novato Hornets in a blowout, winning 5-0. Senior captain Masa Fujita added a hat trick to his already impressive season, scoring three consecutive goals for Redwood. The Giants now sit at a 4-2-4 record — 2-1-2 in league play — with only three games left in the regular season.
Redwood’s fast-paced offense dominated the first half of the game. Within the first eight minutes of the match, senior forward Ben Sherry capitalized on a defensive lapse, scoring an easy goal with the Hornets’ goalkeeper out of position. A couple of minutes later, Fujita ripped the ball in for the score, making the match 2-0. Despite the early advantage, the Giants kept up the pressure. Fujita scored two more goals — one header and one regular kick — completing a hat trick and giving the Giants a massive 4-0 lead heading into the second half.
Some of Redwood’s starters earned a well-deserved rest heading into the second half, but the Giants’ high-powered offense didn’t slow down. Just two minutes into the half, sophomore Van Bowers netted a goal to give the Redwood a staggering 5-0 lead. The Giants cruised to victory with their back line holding strong in the second half, limiting scoring opportunities for Novato and ending the game in a shutout.
Following a tie and a loss in their previous two matches, Redwood will look to build on their statement performance when they face San Marin on Monday, Jan. 27, at home.
