Photo Essay: Girls’ varsity basketball experiences a challenging defeat in a rivalry match against Marin Catholic

On Tuesday, Jan. 16, the girls’ varsity basketball team faced off against Marin Catholic (MC). This game was dedicated to Morgan’s Message, a community of students eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health for student-athletes. Morgan’s Message is an organization created in honor of Morgan Rodgers. Rodgers tragically took her own life due to the overwhelming pressure of playing a Division I collegiate sport. Morgan’s Message, a club at Redwood, provides resources and a place to talk about the pressure that comes with juggling a full-time sport and school. They have meetings every other Wednesday in room 285.

In the game, the Giants started strong as junior Maya Saibel scored to give Redwood a 5-2 lead, but it didn’t last long as MC stole the momentum, leading after the first quarter by a score of 8-6. As the Wildcats kept fighting, the Giants began to struggle defensively, with MC capitalizing on most of their possessions, bringing the score to 30-12 at halftime.

In the second half, the Giants came out of the gates strong. Sophomores Kitty White, Brooke Denler and junior Ainsley Gallagher had an excellent half and often found themselves in the middle of the action. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to take down MC. The Giants appeared frustrated as time went by, as their efforts to build momentum failed and their shots did not fall.

Despite the defeat of 51-34, Redwood is preparing for their next game against Novato on Friday, Jan. 19, at 6 p.m.
