Photo Essay: Boys’ varsity soccer captures an outstanding win over divisional opponent Vintage

On Tuesday, Dec. 12, the boys’ varsity soccer team made a statement against Vintage, who, coming into the game, was 4-0. Searching for revenge this year after a 1-1 tie between these two teams last year, the Giants put on a dominant performance and destroyed the Crushers 6-1.

In the opening moments of the game, senior Ensio Sardans headed in a perfect corner kick that gave the Giants an early 1-0 lead. Not too long after, junior Sam Gersch received the ball and zoomed past a Vintage defender, scoring from a long distance making the score 2-0. Redwood took a massive lead in the remainder of the first half, scoring three more goals. There was one additional goal from Gersch, one goal from junior Masa Fujita, and one from junior Hugo Gebhard, making the score 5-0.

The second half was still in Redwood’s favor. Controlling the ball for a majority of the time, the Vintage defense could not keep up. With 10 minutes left in the game, Vintage answered the blowout with a goal of their own on senior goalie Vaughan Cutler. Vintage’s goal did not stop the Giants from putting an exclamation point on the game with the final goal from junior Ben Sherry.

The boys redeemed themselves against Vintage, finishing the game with a dominant 6-1 victory. They will prepare for the rest of the week to play Terra Linda on Saturday, where they will look to defeat the Trojans, a rematch of the Marin County Athletic League semi-finals from last season.
