Photo Essay: Water polo takes on Marin Academy to splash into MCAL season

On Sep. 12, boys’ and girls’ varsity water polo faced off in their first Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) games of the season. The Giants headed north to San Rafael to face the Marin Academy Wildcats. The boys’ game was the first of the afternoon, and despite a slow start, great defense and crucial saves from senior goalie William Rauzi led them to keep an 8-5 lead heading into halftime. As the second half began, the boys played strong, scoring repeatedly. The physicality shown throughout the game, especially from the Giants, proved crucial as they were able to get stops on defense and turn them into offense. As the game concluded, the boys swam away with a momentous 13-7 win.

The girls’ game started a bit differently. The Wildcats came on strong, torturing the Giants’ defense. As the girls continued to push through their struggles, they scored a few goals of their own. Unfortunately, the Wildcats’ early offensive push was too much to handle, as the girls couldn’t claw back. The game ended with a final score of 14-2 in the Wildcats’ favor.

Fortunately, the season is just beginning though, and both teams will continue their MCAL play on Sep. 19 as visitors against Novato.
