On Wednesday, March 13, the boys varsity tennis team took on the Terra Linda Trojans at home, ultimately securing a win. With this, the team improves to a 8-2 record on the season and 5-0 in league play. 

Coming off a huge win against University on Monday, Redwood looked to continue their momentum against a league opponent. They did not disappoint, winning all seven of their matches, which included four single matches and three doubles. 

Calado Fazal, a junior and captain, reflected on the work the team has put in during pre-season to get to where they are. 

“I think our team is playing really well right now. We have built some momentum. We had a really good win on Monday. The guys are feeling great and our morale is pretty high right now,” Fazal said.   

Sophomore Josh Friedman flew through his match, winning his first and second set by a score of 6 to 1. The other singles matches continued that trend with junior Alejandro Puentes, senior Lukas Berger and Owen Adams.

Because tennis matches are a best-of-seven formatted game, those four alone were able to secure the Giants’  win. However, Redwood didn’t take its foot off the gas for the doubles matches. 

Junior Jonah Kizer and sophomore Benicio Bhasin comfortably dismantled the opposing Trojans quickly, winning in straight sets, 6 to 2 and 6 to 0. The duos of Declan Gray and Oliver Weston, and Milo Mancl and Carter Smith, followed in similar fashion. Both teams won two sets to nothing. 

“Milo and I played great together. It was an overall great match, but we won both sets six-zero. They were good opponents, but we played together and finished our volleys to secure the win,” Smith said.

The Giants take their talents down to Los Angeles this weekend for the annual All American Tournament, where they play Canyon Crest of San Diego for their first match.
