On March 13, students celebrated Pi Day at the mural plaza with Redwood’s annual tradition involving two pi-themed competitions: pie baking and reciting digits of pi. Typically, Pi Day is observed on March 14 since three, one and four are the first significant digits of pi. 

Multiple homemade pies were on display for students to sample. The judging panel was made up of seniors Morgan Sicklick, Madison Bishop and Callie Mock, who tasted each pie and briefly discussed with one another before voting on which was the best overall. 

The winning pie was apple berry, baked by sophomore June McKeon. She competed for a second time, determined to redeem herself after coming in second place the previous year.

“I came back and changed my pie recipe, and it was a success,” McKeon said.

For her first-place pie, McKeon was rewarded with a new whisk and a pi-shaped baking tin.

Senior Julian Roth successfully defended his winning title for the third year in a row after reciting 355 digits of pi, surpassing the other contestants in a landslide.

“Just today, I remembered [it was Pi Day]. So I spent all last period reviewing, and I still had it,” Roth said.

Overall, Redwood’s Pi Day was a success for yet another year, bringing students together to commemorate the number itself with some delicious pie.
