On Wednesday, Jan. 14, the girls’ varsity soccer tied with their rival, Branson. The final score was 1-1, setting their Marin County Athletic League record at 1-2-0 so far this season.
This past Monday, Redwood tied with San Rafeal, adding motivation for the match against Branson. Throughout the intense first half, the Giants sustained constant pressure on offense, allowing several scoring opportunities. Their defense also worked hard shutting down fast breaks from the Bulls. Both teams played evenly, heading into the second half tied, 0-0.
With only a quarter of the game left, senior Lily O’Shea secured a goal from an assist across the field, bringing the score to 1-0. As time ticked away, both teams worked tirelessly to get the next point. Before Redwood could capitalize, Branson responded with a goal off a quick transition run with 8:50 left, sealing the match in a tie.
Junior goalie Evie Dickerson reflected on her team’s performance and how the mentality leading into the game affected their play.
“We brought the mentality and brought the energy,” Dickerson said. “We had some injuries leading up to [the game], but the fact that we were all [mostly] healthy and every single one of us put effort into this game, I’m really proud of us.”
When asked about the teams’ performance, Dickerson felt that the improvement the Giants have made in the season so far will continue to lead into a promising year.
“We did well switching [the ball] through the midfield,” Dickerson said. “We did it a few times that were dangerous balls to the wings and got some cross offs in the first half, [but] I thought we did really well [at swinging the ball across the field] especially because we’ve been working on it.”
In the future, Redwood will be playing Berkeley High School on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 1 p.m. on their home field.
