On Saturday, Nov. 22, the girls’ varsity basketball team played their first game of the season, beating Maria Carrillo High School with a final score of 53-31. The Giants’ starting lineup featured senior Kitty White, juniors Hindi Copeland and Maddie Petersmeyer and sophomores Rachel Towns and Drew Schultz.
The Giants maintained a steady lead throughout the game with a little scoring drought at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but ended strong with a spree of three-pointers, featuring White, sophomore Drew Schultz, freshman Phoebe Saibel and senior Jayden Vangorder.
White, in her fourth year on the varsity team, entered the game with tranquility, but she acknowledged the nerves of her younger teammates getting their first varsity minutes.
“I wasn’t too nervous about it, but I know that our team, as a whole, had a lot of jitters,” White said, “We have a lot of players that are starting roles for the first year.”
White recognized her younger teammate Schultz, who showed up in the fourth quarter playing point guard and leading the offense effectively.
“[Schultz], did really well at handling pressure and getting us some points in really crucial moments, like a three-pointer in the fourth quarter to break our little drought of points,” White said.
Head Coach Zach Borello was proud of the energy the team brought to the game.
“It’s a group that won’t quit,” Borello said. “There’s a lot of positives to take away [from the game], but their energy was fantastic.”
After Saturday’s victory, the Giants will take on University on Tuesday, Nov. 25 in hopes of continuing their winning streak.
