Homecoming spirit week touched off with its second event of the week, Klassy Kickoff, an annual tradition where junior and senior girls face off in a flag football game. As lunch started on Thursday, Oct. 16, students flooded the stands, getting ready to watch their friends flag each other down to win bragging rights between classes.
At the start of the game, both teams expressed great offense, with junior Riya Pyle pulling two seniors’ flags in back-to-back plays. Interceptions and incomplete passes were a common theme around the first five minutes. As the game went on, the juniors found their footing, while the seniors were left behind. Switching to their second quarterback of the game, taking out junior Ellie Washing and putting in Logan Leverte, the juniors got their offense going with outstanding plays. From this point on, the juniors remained on the seniors’ half of the field until 15 minutes into the game when Leverte threw less than a five-yard pass to Pyle who ran it down.
As the game went on, the seniors continued to lack offensive prowess. With the juniors’ offense being surprisingly efficient, the game remained on the seniors’ side. A testament to the seniors’ defense, with standout plays from senior Lucy Jeffers, who made several impressive interceptions and nearly turned one into a scoring opportunity, if not for a previous incomplete pass. Both seniors Saki Beattie and Hilah Brekhus-Lavinsky had multiple flag pulls, saving the seniors from more points going to the juniors.
The juniors’ offense was so powerful that after many attempts, they secured another touchdown by Pyle, thrown by Leverte, who kept a strong connection throughout the game. Junior Sophie Levin notes that key players were crucial in securing this victory.
“I think Riya Pyle deserves every award possible. She is the MVP because she did an awesome job,” Levin said.
Levin believes that regardless of the end result of the game, all players put in their best effort.
Despite a strong defensive effort from the seniors, the juniors’ offense proved unstoppable, sealing a 14-0 Klassy Kickoff victory.
