The girls’ varsity volleyball team dominantly swept San Marin in their senior night match on Oct. 17. Starting the first set strong, led by junior outside hitters Logan Leverte and Maddy Wagner, Redwood got off to a hot start, leading 5-1 soon after the first serve crossed the net.
Senior libero Liliana Huerta believed the key to the first set dominance was their low error rate.
“It was hard for San Marin to get any points as long as we weren’t giving them anything for free,” Huerta said.
Huerta also credited Leverte and junior setter Katie Lazzareschi for their outstanding performances.
They continued their momentum throughout the first game, quickly increasing their lead to 19-3 and eventually winning 25-6. The second set, however, got off to a rocky start for the giants.
After a tough first set loss for San Marin, they came back stronger, taking an early lead. Redwood had a few miscommunications leading to unforced errors and a deficit they had to make up later in the game. They ended up just pulling through in the final points of the set, scraping by with a 25-22 win.
The third set was competitive all the way through until Redwood pulled away with some crucial back row attacks from Wagner set by Lazzareschi. The score was 25-20, and Redwood was off to celebrate their seniors, Huerta and Keira Sisuphan.
