On May 17, Marin’s Throckmorton Theater hosted a captivating performance of “Hadestown,” showcasing the local talent of musicians and actors ages 12 to 20. “Hadestown,” a Tony Award-winning modern retelling of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, transports the audience to a haunting underworld. With its blend of jazz, blues and folk music, the musical follows Orpheus’s quest to bring his love, Eurydice, back to the sun from the grasp of the underworld god Hades. Along the way, he faces impossible trials that could lead them to a life apart forever.
In her last show with the Throckmorton company after eight years, Tamalpais High School senior Hannah Canin played the role of Eurydice. Canin explained why she values the company.
“[My] favorite thing about Throckmorton is definitely the community and family that we build in every show. I’ve never found people like the people who do theater here. It’s a place that I always feel comfortable and safe in and I look forward to coming here every single day,” Canin said.
As the curtain rose on opening night, the energy in the theater was electric. Hadestown’s storyline appealed to a wide variety of people, as Canin explained.
“[Hadestown] provides a more historical aspect for people who are interested in Greek mythology, but also a very modern aspect for people who are interested in modern musical theater. All the songs and styles have something for everyone,” Canin said.
Throckmorton will continue its showings of “Hadestown“ with two casts through May, performing on the weekends between May 16 and June 1, with showings from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. To purchase tickets, and get your chance to experience this thrilling production, visit https://www.throckmortontheatre.org/.
