On April 24, the boys’ varsity tennis team played Tamalpais High School (Tam) in the last regular season match and won 6-1.
Before the match, players and spectators alike circled up for a moment of silence in honor of the Archie Williams students’ lives lost in the recent car crash, as coach Craig Flax said a few words to the group.
“[This is a] massive tragedy that has touched our entire community. We’re grateful for the opportunity to be with our loved ones,” Flax said.
Then, both teams lined up to receive their assignments and fist-bump their opponents. Senior Tugdual Ricordel won a tough match on court number one. Ricordel explained how he managed to achieve victory.
“ [The match] was getting a little tight, which I didn’t really want it to be. But I was able to pull through, keep it consistent, take every point and win,” Ricordel said.
All graduating seniors were in the lineup to play as part of the Senior Day celebration, and the team spirit was particularly festive as juniors and underclassmen supported their seniors in the last low-pressure match of the season.
Sophomore Maddox Nguyen noticed the high team spirit during the match.
“Whenever someone wins a point or so, we all try to be as loud as we can, trying to support the team as much as we can [and] support our teammates,” Nguyen said.
Ricordel appreciated this support while he was playing. The best players on the team took a turn on the sidelines to give their support.
“It’s really nice to see everyone here. It was nice seeing the top guys cheering for us,” Ricordel said.
Redwood is undefeated in the Marin County Athletic League and is working on forwarding their team. Ricordel explained the team’s next steps this season.
“We’re always supporting each other, and pushing it one step at a time. Hopefully we can go far this year and make it to state,” Ricordel said.
The boys’ next Marin County Athletic League match is scheduled for next Wednesday, April 30.
