Currently seeded first in the Marin County Athletic League (MCAL), girls’ varsity soccer scraped out a 2-1 win over the number two-seeded Tamalpais Hawks on Jan. 30.
The Giants came into the game with a drive to win; they had a disappointing game on Tuesday, tying San Marin at home on Senior Night and ending their winning streak. Redwood channeled that energy to hold steady defensively in the first half, where neither team scored. Both teams had strong attacks, but neither could convert a goal.
The Hawks came out strong in the second half, scoring the game’s first goal 20 minutes into the period. Senior forward Kaia Amir commented on the Giants’ increased energy as a response to the goal.
“In the end, it came down to the fact that we really brought the energy in the second half; it allowed us to have a comeback,” Amir said.
With this energy, the Giants answered Tamalpais’ goal, with senior forward Sarah Farese slipping the ball past the goalie to tie the game back up. Not even a minute later, Farese scored again, tapping the ball beyond the goalie’s reach and knocking it into the back of the net, giving the Redwood a one-goal lead.
Amir credited the Giants’ success to their movement in the midfield, something they improved on in the second half.
“Once the midfield came together, we were all able to connect [and eventually score],” Amir said.
Both teams finished the game hard, with more scoring opportunities on each side, but no more goals. The Giants will face off against the fifth-seeded Archie Williams Falcons at home on Feb. 5 in their last match before the MCAL playoffs.
