Redwood High School was the site of three North Coast Section home games this Friday. The action started at 3:00 pm and didn’t end until 8:20 pm. First was the fourth-seeded girls’ varsity soccer game against fifth-seeded University High School. Then the first-seeded boys’ varsity lacrosse team faced the ninth-seeded Amador Valley High School at 5:30 pm. Finally, at 7:00 pm, the fourth-seeded boys’ varsity volleyball team squared off against fifth-seeded Alameda High School.
3:00 pm – Girls’ varsity soccer
Fifth-seeded University dealt the girls’ soccer team a season-ending 1-0 loss on Friday in the NCS quarterfinals.
The fourth-seeded Giants, who scored eight times in their Wednesday drubbing of Bentley, were unable to muster a goal against a Devils team that possessed the ball well all day.
University’s lone goal came early in the first half when a botched corner-kick clear by Redwood allowed University senior Sarah Cook to float in a shot that slipped through goalie Mia Glen-Schuster’s hands and into the back of the Giants’ net.
Redwood finished the season 7-6-3 overall and 4-3-1 in MCAL, bowing out of league playoffs in the semifinals against Marin Catholic last week.
5:30 pm – Boys’ varsity lacrosse:
In the week after winning the MCAL pennant, the Giants (16-6, 11-0) have shown no mercy in their quest for a second consecutive NCS title.
After defeating Northgate 17-2 on Wednesday, the first-seeded boys’ varsity lacrosse team once again shelled out a dominating victory, shutting out ninth-seeded Amador Valley High School (11-0) 15-0 on Friday in the second round of NCS.
Senior Patrick Tracy led the attack with five goals while Peter Mascheroni added four and Jon Gibbs scored three. Senior Oliver Madison played well in the goal, making several impressive saves to preserve the shutout.
The Giants will face the winner of Jesuit-De La Salle game in the semifinals next Wednesday at 5:30 pm at Redwood.
7:00 pm – Boys’ varsity volleyball:
Coming off a disappointing MCAL championship loss just a week ago, the boys’ varsity volleyball team rebounded with a convincing 3-0 victory over Alameda High School in the NCS quarterfinals.
The fourth-seeded Giants (26-12, 12-2) defeated fifth-seeded Alameda (25-6) in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-15.
The Giants will move on to play at first-seeded Campolindo (32-2) on Wednesday at 7:00 pm. Campolindo is ranked as the number eight overall team in the nation by MaxPreps.com.
