The southeast corner of Redwood once featured a field covered with holes and dead grass and was known as the home of more full-sized wild geese than athletes.
However, Ghilotti Field recently found the lifeline it needed to be resurfaced into a brand new turf field.
The field officially opened on Monday, Feb. 24 after the million dollar project, and the lacrosse teams have been fundraising to cover the costs of the other basic necessities in order to use the field, including bleachers and a scoreboard.
Both the boys’ and girls’ JV and varsity teams now switch off practicing on the field.
The boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams held the first ever Wall-ball-athon fundraiser on Jan 25 to collect money for the field.
Like a typical Walk-athon, each player asked family and friends to sponsor them to continually rebound lacrosse balls off a back wall of the school.
The girls’ team raised about $6,000, and the boys’ team raised around $3,000.
Each player showed up anywhere from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for at least 30 minutes.
