On Monday, March 24, boys’ varsity lacrosse played a tight, suspenseful game against rival Tamalpais High School (Tam), facing a crushing overtime defeat after being tied at the end of the fourth quarter.
Starting off the first quarter, Redwood had possession of the ball and took the lead with a score of 3-1. By the second quarter, the Giants kept the lead with five goals but the pressure rose as Tam scored three more goals. As the third quarter approached, Redwood and Tam were neck and neck with a score of 6-6, staying tied into the fourth quarter with a score 7-7. With an added four minutes of overtime, whoever got the first goal would be the winner. Tam scored a last minute goal and defeated the Giants, 8-7.
Mark Holmstrom, father of left stick midfielder senior Matt Holmstrom, who was taking sideline photos for the team, could feel the tension from the close game.
“I would say it was very evenly matched. Redwood started out with a strong presence. Both teams went back and forth within a point all the way to the end, got to overtime, and, you know, lost possession and the other team scored,” Holmstrom said.
Holmstrom remarked that the defeat had mostly to do with who could get ball possession from the face-off with such a closely tied game.
“It’s all about possession and overtime, so that was critical,” Holmstrom said.
On the other hand, Kevin Vasquez, father of senior defender Kody Vasquez, junior attacker Rudy Vasquez and junior midfielder Tommy Vasquez, had critiques of how the game was played, with missed opportunities to gain possession.

“I think both teams would probably say it was super sloppy. There were a lot of turnovers and not much execution, but everybody worked really hard, and at the end, it was a close game until the final buzzer,” Vasquez said.
Boys’ lacrosse is ready to recover from this loss with a hopeful win against Archie Williams High School on Thursday and Saint Ignatius High School on Friday.
