Art and appetizers attracted families and community members to Book Passage in Corte Madera on Saturday, March 1 to view Redwood Advanced Placement (AP) Art students’ creative works. The theme of the exposition, led by Redwood art teacher Lauren Bartone, was “where we find ourselves,” reflecting the challenges students face and how they attempt to navigate them.
For Bartone, the most rewarding part of the “Where We Find Ourselves” art show was gathering all her students and creating a unified theme around them.
“I looked at what students were most proud of or what they were submitting, and it seemed to be a response to a very complicated world right now,” Bartone said. “I get to see all [of my students’] good days and bad days, and their struggles, and so I’m really proud that [the students] were able to finish [artwork] that they were proud enough to frame and submit.”
AP Studio Art: 2D Design and Drawing student Cassia Weasler was gratified by the work she was able to create, and felt it was important to share during a tumultuous time..
“It’s important to share your art with the world, because what’s the point of making art if you’re not gonna share it?” Weasler said. “In a world that is really struggling, and not a lot of good stuff is happening, art is an expression of emotions and it is a beautiful place to show how you think and how you feel.”
Bartone and the artists alike were excited by the large turnout and the diversity of community members who had come to view their work.
“As an art teacher, one of the hardest things to do is create an audience for your students. The audience is so important. [Part of the importance is] knowing that your voice is heard and knowing how the world responds to what you’ve made,” Bartone said.
