As the ball launches far into the outfield, the stands believe St. Helena will secure a few runs by this play. However, outfielder junior Lily Cox is quick to bring it in, throwing the ball with strong intention to senior Hailey Carlton, which was followed by her throw to junior Ashley Ball at 3rd base, tagging a St. Helena plays before she makes it to home base.
On Monday, Feb. 24, girls’ varsity softball played against the St. Helena Saints in an engaging scrimmage, ending in a 9-8 win for the Giants. The Saints were up to bat for the top of the first half inning and secured four runs for their team. St. Helena scored another three for the bottom of the first half, with the Giants still at zero. Redwood used this as motivation for the rest of the scrimmage.
At the top of the second inning, the Giants got all three outs in a row, with no St. Helena players even touching first base. Progressing into the bottom of the second inning, junior Stella Belluomini was first to bat and started a rally with a hit up the middle, followed by a steal by junior Gia Meyers, then a grounder to short. Meyers scored the first run for Redwood in the scrimmage, resulting in loud cheers from the Giants’ dugout. Ending the inning strong, freshman Jocelyn Munoz slid to home, bringing the Giants to a score of 5-4.
At the top of the third inning, senior Makaila Eller secured an amazing catch from the outfield, helping the Giants remain at 5-4. Two runs batted in (RBIs) were then assured by junior Lily Cox in the bottom of the third inning, bringing the score to 7-4. The score stayed stable until the fifth inning, ending in a strikeout for St. Helena, a walk and a groundout. Even with a slow start, the Giants secured an exciting 9-8 win, putting up a fight and helping them prepare for their upcoming game on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at home at 4 p.m.
