On Saturday, Dec. 14, girls’ varsity basketball faced San Domenico, winning victoriously with a final score of 71-47. This exciting win followed their previous defeat to Acalanes on Thursday, reflecting their strong mentality and ability to pull through on the court. Senior captain Maya Saibel was extremely satisfied with the game’s result.
“We played great defense and capitalized on the offensive side of the floor. I thought everyone was working really hard and we were able to build a good lead and sealed [the lead] in the fourth quarter,” Saibel said.
The Giants held a tight lead of eight points in the first half but managed to blow the game open, winning the game by 25 points. Senior Ainsley Gallagher felt that the second half of the game was where the team really shined.
“In the third quarter, we came out and brought tons of energy and that gave us a lot of momentum to continue playing well,” Gallagher said.
She also expressed how halftime prep talks are important during games and what is said during those talks often sets up the second half of the game.
“Big charging words are important. We tell [each other] things like ‘come out strong’ and ‘throw the first punch,’” Gallagher said.
Despite having to play a strong team like San Dominico, Saibel felt that the Giants had good strategies for prevailing against even the strongest players.
“We had good defensive stops and the ability to rotate onto the better players of San Domenico and keep them from scoring points,” Saibel said.
The Giants are currently ranked 13th in the North Coast Section and will face The Branson School in their next game on Dec. 21 with hopes of continuing their winning streak.
